Madagascar - The island where nature writes its own story
When you picture Madagascar, what comes to your mind?
It might be baobabs rising like sentinels, the world’s finest vanilla, or chameleons displaying colours you did not know existed. Or perhaps you hear the catchy I like to move it move it tune alongside scenes from the animated film, with its singing lemurs and colourful landscapes.
This island, just across the Indian Ocean from mainland Africa, has been separated from the rest of the continent for around 88 million years. Over that vast stretch of time, its plants and animals evolved in isolation, adapting to their own rhythms and landscapes without influence from the outside world. The result is a place unlike anywhere else, a living laboratory of evolution. And now over 90 percent of its wildlife exists nowhere else on Earth.
Yet this remarkable biodiversity has faced a quiet crisis. In just a few decades, vast forests were cleared. Wildlife vanished at alarming rates. Fertile soils washed into the sea. Rivers ran brown during the rainy season and ran dry during the dry months. Communities who depended on the land for food, medicine, and income found the ground less giving each year.

Bôndy’s work
This is where Bôndy’s work takes root. By planting and protecting native trees, and by working closely with local communities, Bôndy is bringing back what was lost. These trees are not simply replacing what was cut down. They restore entire ecosystems. They shade streams, hold the soil together, and create homes for wildlife. They are part of a living cycle that supports both nature and people.
At Treebytree, we are proud to partner with Bôndy because we deeply admire the way they combine ecological expertise with community-led action. Their approach ensures that every tree planted not only restores nature but also supports the people who depend on it. Together, we are helping to turn the tide toward regeneration in one of the most unique places on Earth.
Now, the change can be seen and felt. Forests are returning. Birds and lemurs are finding their way back. Families are harvesting fruits and medicines from trees they planted themselves. The land is holding water again. Hope is taking root alongside the seedlings.
When you choose to adopt or gift a fruit tree, you become part of this story of renewal. You help to restore a unique ecosystem, strengthen communities, and safeguard a natural heritage found nowhere else on Earth. Every tree is a step toward a future where life thrives once more. And with fruit trees, that future is even sweeter, providing food, shade, and income for local families while nurturing the forests and wildlife that make Madagascar unlike anywhere else.
